You may have heard the term SEO used in web design before, and wondered what it means. SEO stands for search engine optimisation. This is a series of processes designed to get websites ranking on search engines like Google, Yahoo and Bing for keywords related to the site. For instance, a hairdresser may rank for phrases like “haircuts in London” or “ladies haircuts in Bolton”. When people type their question into google, it is not random why the sites appear in the order they do! The ones nearest the top (within the top 10) will have worked hard to get their sites there using SEO techniques.
Some SEO techniques include ensuring the title and heading tags of the site are optimal. These are read by google to see what the site and page is about. Another SEO aspect is that of content – the sites with the best, most useful and relevant content will generally be rewarded with a good ranking.
